DoylesRoom.com Pros Leave Mark at WPT Legends of Poker Tournament

Brunson 10 members and longtime DoylesRoom pro shine in live tournament and major online poker game

Las Vegas, Nevada - August 24th, 2010 No single win turns a poker player into a poker legend. Instead, it's consistent cashes in major poker tournaments that leads to legendary status. With strong performances in both the WPT Legends of Poker tournament and a large online poker tournament, members of The Brunson 10 continue to show the poker world why Doyle Brunson refers to them as legends-in-the-making.

Brunson 10 pro David Sands earned $15,500 for a 17th place finish in the WPT Legends of Poker tournament at the Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens, California. At just 25-years-old, Sands is already an online poker legend with more than $2.3 million in career earnings to his name.

Amit Makhija, who cashed in three separate World Series of Poker tournaments in 2010, adds $10,200 to his career winnings after finishing in 45th place. Makhija, a member of Doyle Brunson's team of pros, has won more than $3.6 million playing online poker tournaments and live events.

Longtime DoylesRoom pro Allen Kessler added $13,000 to his tournament winnings this year thanks to a 20th place finish in the same WPT poker tournament. Kessler has had a stellar year so far, cashing in eight World Series of Poker tournaments this year alone.

In the online world, Daniel Kelly of The Brunson 10 won $26,000 in a $300+20 Pot Limit Omaha tournament on August 23. The 21-year-old poker prodigy is DoylesRoom's $6 million dollar man, having won more money before he turned 21 than most people earn in a lifetime.

The $4,800+200 buy-in WPT Legends of Poker tournament started on August 20th with 462 players competing for a $2,151,072 prize pool. The tournament is still underway.

Pam Brunson: She's the real deal

Call, raise, fold, all-in. Now flop, and don't forget to hold 'em.

Las Vegas, Nevada - August 9th, 2010 A lot of folks speak poker, but not many are fluent enough to make a living at it. Pam Brunson is one.

"I do think poker is in my genes," said Brunson. With her pedigree, it would be strange if it weren't.

Brunson, 45, is the daughter of poker legend and Texas native Doyle Brunson, who's been called the Arnold Palmer, Babe Ruth and Michael Jordan of his game. The elder Brunson, now 76 and going strong, has won 10 World Series of Poker bracelets and was the first person to win $1 million playing poker. His book, Super System, published in 1978, revolutionized poker strategy, and his autobiography, The Godfather of Poker, is a link to the rough-and-tumble days of a bygone era.

Pam Brunson, who was born in Fort Worth, moved to Las Vegas when she was 9 with her poker-playing dad and her mom, Louise.

She remembers a normal childhood and, while poker was always in the background, it was never played at home. Other card games, yes, but not poker.

"My dad had a favorite saying," Brunson said. "He'd say, 'Does a taxi driver come home at night and drive cars?' He didn't want me playing poker or hanging out with poker players or dating poker players. Things have changed a lot since those days. It was a rougher crowd back then."

After high school, Brunson attended a series of colleges—the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Okla.; and the University of Texas at El Paso. Then in the late '80s, a friend from Oral Roberts moved to San Antonio. After a visit to the city and to UTSA, Brunson was hooked.

"I immediately fell in love with San Antonio," she said. "It has the best, most fun places to go country dancing. I love country dancing. And I love the people in Texas. I'd be there now if I didn't have family here [in Las Vegas]."

Brunson enrolled at UTSA as a sociology major with a psychology minor, and, after graduating with a B.A. in 1989, moved to California, where her poker genes kicked in. She and brother Todd, also now a professional player, started learning the ropes at the Oceanside Card Club, co-owned by her father and a couple of his friends.

Brunson then spent seven years in the assisted living industry, working her way up from receptionist to executive director of a facility, before moving back to Vegas in 2000 to invest in real estate and start her poker career in earnest.

She's done well, finishing in the money in many tournaments and winning several, and has played in the World Series of Poker. But perhaps she's most proud of being the "last Brunson out" in every tournament she's played with Todd and her dad, including three World Series of Poker main events.

"Todd and I usually make a thousand-dollar 'last longer' bet, and I haven't lost a bet yet," Brunson said, laughing.

She said the psychology courses she took at UTSA "helped groom me to be successful on the felt."

"I think psychology is a huge part of poker," Brunson said. "Picking up on physical signs and body movements, planning strategies, reading people, using psychology and reverse psychology— trying to figure out what someone is thinking in a hand or thinks you are thinking—is very important."

And, she said, her parents "have come around" and fully support her career, partly because the game has changed

"There are more women playing now, more professionals, college graduates, doctors and lawyers from mainstream society," Brunson said.

Earlier this year, Brunson joined her dad's poker empire when she became manager of the Brunson 10, a group of up-and-coming young poker professionals, on Doyle's popular online poker site, Doylesroom.com.

While she's as settled in Vegas as the last showdown hand, Texas will always be the ace in her heart.

"I'm proud to be a Texan," Brunson said, "and I really enjoyed going to UTSA and living in San Antonio."

Brunson 10 Now Eight Strong with Signing of David “Doc” Sands

Sands Joins Brunson 10 After Winning DoylesRoom.com Competition at WSOP

Las Vegas, Nevada - July 19th, 2010 The November Nine may have been chosen, but the real talk of the poker community surrounds The Brunson 10. DoylesRoom.com has revealed that David “Doc” Sands is the newest recruit for Doyle Brunson’s team of legends-in-the-making. Sands joins seven other online poker prodigies on The Brunson 10, bringing the headcount to eight, after earning the most points at the World Series of Poker.

Sands’ career earnings top $2.3 million and at the 2010 World Series of Poker the new Brunson 10 pro cashed in five separate events, winning over $88,000 and earning 2,269.10 points on the Become a Legend leaderboard. While Sands spent most of the World Series in Las Vegas, he still found time to flex his muscles at the online poker tables, cashing in three major online tournaments.

David Sands had been competing with Daniel Kelly, Faraz Jaka and Michael Martin at this year’s World Series of Poker for a spot on Doyle Brunson’s team of legends-in-the-making. Each player was awarded points every time they cashed in a World Series of Poker event. The player with the most points at the end of the WSOP would become The Brunson 10’s next member.

With 2,269.10 Brunson 10 points, David Sands blew by Faraz Jaka and Michael Martin to take the Become a Legend title. Technically, Sands earned fewer points than Daniel Kelly. However, the 21-year-old college student was awarded an automatic spot on The Brunson 10 after winning World Series of Poker Event #52, a $25,000 buy-in tournament with a $4.5 million prize pool. Kelly earned a WSOP bracelet, a $1.3 million first place prize, and the seventh spot on Doyle Brunson’s team.

At the start of the Become a Legend Leaderboard competition, DoylesRoom.com announced that if any player wins a WSOP bracelet, he’d instantly win a spot on The Brunson 10 and the contest would continue. With Kelly out of the running, Sands ended the World Series of Poker with the most points.

Sands and Kelly join Zachary Clark, Amit Makhija, Dani Stern, Chris Moorman, Alex Kamberis and Steve Gross on The Brunson 10. Doyle Brunson will continue to handpick online poker players for his team of extraordinary talent until the group is packed with 10 of the world’s best.

More information on all Brunson 10 members including financial successes on the poker tournament circuit is listed at DoylesRoom.com.

WSOP Event #38 Flush with DoylesRoom Pros as Stern, Makhija and Kessler Sail Through to Day 3

Two Brunson 10 members and longtime DoylesRoom pro doing well in $10,000 Pot-Limit Championship

Las Vegas, Nevada - June 22nd, 2010 When Day 4 of World Series of Poker Event #38 begins on Wednesday, there's a chance the final table will be stacked with DoylesRoom.com pros. Heading into Day 3, the $10,000 Pot-Limit Hold'em Championship tournament includes two Brunson 10 members and one longtime DoylesRoom pro.

Dani Stern and Amit Makhija of The Brunson 10, Doyle Brunson's team of elite pros, begin play today seated at the same table. Stern sits comfortably in 9th place with 425,000 chips and Makhija is five spots behind him in 13th place with 267,000 chips.

Just 25 players remain in the tournament that pays out 27 spots. That means Stern and Makhija are guaranteed to win at least $21,665.

Also competing for the first place prize of $617,214 in the tournament with a $2.5 million prize pool is DoylesRoom.com pro Allen Kessler. He currently sits in 24th place but with a guaranteed cash in the cards—his 5th one of the year—Kessler is now a contender for 2010 Player of the Year.

Faraz Jaka Leads in Total Winnings on DoylesRoom.com's Become a Legend Leaderboard

Competition for next spot on DoylesRoom's Brunson 10 gets aggressive as Faraz Jaka and David Sands jockey for first position

Las Vegas, Nevada - June 21st, 2010 A recent near-$100k cash at the World Series of Poker has sent Faraz Jaka soaring to the number two spot on DoylesRoom's Brunson 10 Become a Legend Leaderboard. While the Brunson 10 contender trails first place leader David Sands by over 750 points, Jaka holds the tile for greatest financial success at the 2010 World Series of Poker so far.

A $94,956 cash for a 5th place finish in Event #35, a Heads-Up No-Limit Hold'em tournament, sent Jaka climbing up the leaderboard. He currently sits in second place with 1,143.31 points and has earned a total of $109,187 at the 2010 WSOP.

Occupying the first place spot is David "Doc" Sands with 1937.52 points and $82,163. Though Sands has earned $27,000 less than Jaka, the Brunson 10 contender is holding onto the first place title thanks to the Become a Legend leaderboard formula that DoylesRoom is using to calculate position based on the size of the field and events cashed in.

To be fair to all Brunson 10 contenders, players will receive more points for placing higher in a tournament and/or having a higher total prize pool.

Sands helped secure his lead on the leaderboard with a $20,716 win for an 18th place finish in Event #30. He earned 565.74 points on the leaderboard for his performance.

Sands and Jaka are competing with Daniel Kelly and Michael Martin at this year's World Series of Poker for the seventh spot on Doyle Brunson's team of legends-in-the-making. Each player is awarded points every time they cash in a World Series of Poker event. The player with the most points at the end of the WSOP will be The Brunson 10's next member.

The next Brunson 10 member will join Zachary Clark, Amit Makhija, Chris Moorman, Dani Stern, Alex Kamberis and Steve Gross on Doyle Brunson's team of elite pros. Doyle Brunson, poker's biggest legend, will continue to handpick members for his group of young, elite poker players until the team is packed with 10 of the world's best legends-in-the-making.

DoylesRoom.com Holds Battle of Online Poker Titans at WSOP for 7th Spot on the Brunson 10

Daniel Kelly and David "Doc" Sands to Fight for next spot on Doyle Brunson′s team of elite pros in Las Vegas

Las Vegas, Nevada - May 25th, 2010 It′s not just the Main Event bracelet at this year′s WSOP that will decide poker′s next big legend. A new contest announced today by DoylesRoom.com will shift the spotlight from big-name pros with endorsements to a handful of online poker titans without.

Daniel Kelly and David "Doc" Sands are two of a possible three or four players confirmed to take part in DoylesRoom.com′s WSOP Brunson 10 competition. The two will face off against each other at the WSOP for the next spot on the Brunson 10, Doyle Brunson′s team of elite poker pros. Both players will earn points for every cash and the player with the most points will be drafted to the Brunson 10.

At just 26 years old, Doc Sands is a well-respected member of the online poker playing community thanks to his proven championship style of play. Sands has won over $2.2 million at the tables, including a 1st place win in the FTOPS XII Event 10 for $259,440 and another tournament title in the Sunday Major that added $132,788 to his bank account.

DoylesRoom.com Lets Online Poker Players Choose Their Own WSOP Adventure

Online poker site will award players with a VIP Las Vegas experience that includes cash which players can use for the events of their choosing

Las Vegas, Nevada – March 19, 2010 – With 57 events in this year′s WSOP, why are so many online poker players who win a seat being forced to play in the Main Event? DoylesRoom.com management asked themselves that very question. Not satisfied with the answer, they decided to award players at DoylesRoom.com with a virtual blank check instead of a Main Event seat. The only online poker site to bear the legendary Doyle Brunson name will award $12,500 and $2,500 prize packages that include a VIP Vegas experience and cash which players can use to buy into any WSOP event of their choice.

Stated Julius Maxwell, spokesperson for DoylesRoom.com, "Our players have expressed interest in playing not just in the Main Event, but also in some of the smaller events. By giving away cash and letting the players choose the events they want to play in, we′re giving people the freedom to experience and enjoy the world′s biggest poker tournament on their own terms. Our players know that there is more than one path you can choose to become a legend."

Maxwell says that with a Main Event field numbering in the upper thousands year after year, a lot of online poker players look to the smaller events for a better shot at winning a bracelet. Even if someone at DoylesRoom wins a $12,500 prize package, they can use the money to buy into a number of smaller events. Or, if they like, they can push it all into the Main Event. It′s completely their call.

DoylesRoom will hold a weekly Super Satellite at 9pm ET every Sunday. The $350+24 tournament will award the winner(s) with $12,500 in cash. Qualifiers are available from as low as $3+0.30. Players can also purchase Step tickets starting at just $1.10+0.10 for the chance to win $2,500 in cash. There are five Steps to the WSOP Step series.

Regardless of whether a player wins $12,500 or $2,500 for the World Series of Poker, they′ll automatically win a legendary VIP experience with the DoylesRoom team that includes a private dinner with Doyle Brunson, an invite to DoylesRoom.com′s all-inclusive party, a photo session with Doyle Brunson, a Meet & Greet with the Legend, autographed copies of his books, and DoylesRoom.com apparel & gear.

Doyle Brunson and Wife Louise the Best Pair in Poker According to Wall Street Journal Article

The face of DoylesRoom.com talks marriage with Wall Street Journal just before Valentine′s Day

Las Vegas, Nevada – February 10, 2010 – Flip through any poker print publication and you′re likely to come across a piece on Doyle Brunson. Having played the game for over 50 years, Doyle Brunson is without a doubt poker′s biggest living legend and the player who commands the most respect. However, it′s not just poker publications that value his iconic stature.

This week, with his wife Louise by his side, Doyle Brunson was featured in the Wall Street Journal′s Life & Style section in a piece on happily married couples. Ozzie & Sharon Osbourne and Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter were also interviewed for the article.

Brunson′s advice for a long and happy marriage? Keep some things secret. Doyle has won and lost millions over the course of his 50-plus-year career. Not filling his wife in on all of his wins and losses is part of the key to their 47-year marriage, a partnership that has had its fair share of ups and downs, including the loss of a child and being robbed at gunpoint.

In his new book, The Godfather of Poker, Brunson chronicles his lifetime of legendary gambling and life experiences, covering everything from tragedies like the freak injury that ruined his chance to play in the NBA, to major highlights like his 10th WSOP bracelet win, to unbelievable endeavors like trying to literally raise the Titanic.

The book is available at Barnes & Noble and other major book retailers across the country. Online poker players at DoylesRoom.com can also use their Gold Chips to purchase the book at DoylesRoomStore.com.

DoylesRoom.com's Chris Moorman Begins 2010 with Key PocketFives Title Under His Belt

Las Vegas, Nevada - Jan 5th, 2010

Chris Moorman of The Brunson 10 takes title in PocketFives.com's Online Poker Tournament Player Rankings

Chris Moorman has a lot to defend in 2010. The pro for DoylesRoom.com's Brunson 10 was ranked #1 worldwide on PocketFives.com's list of online poker tournament players, an achievement that quantifies the unequaled respect he's earned among the online poker community.

In addition to including tournament wins and online poker successes, the PocketFives ranking system also takes into account long-term successes at the tables and incorporates a polling system to determine the top players.

Fellow online poker tournament players were asked to select the players that they believe will be successful in the future based on past performances. After a string of successes in 2009, it remains fairly obvious why Moorman had been chosen as the #1 pro.

His online poker tournament wins in 2009 include $28,000 in a $65k Guarantee in February, $88,166 in a Daily $100 Rebuy in February, $39,750 in a $150k Guarantee in March, and $52,950 in a Daily $100 Rebuy in September.

Moorman was also ranked fourth in both CardPlayer's and Bluff's Online Player of the Year Leaderboard rankings in 2009.

Chris Moorman joined The Brunson 10 in mid-September as the fourth member of Doyle Brunson's team of elite pros. Moorma's over $1.7 million in lifetime winnings include nine career titles and 148 cashes, made up of online poker successes and several land-based poker achievements.

Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic Final Table

Las Vegas, Nevada - Dec 24th, 2009

Not surprisingly one of the toughest tournament of the year turned out a final table laden with top pros. While tournament namesake Doyle Brunson and his team of emerging online pros didn't have a representative at the final table the cast of the final 6 was still filled with top notch players covering a wide array of styles and backgrounds.

The tournament ended up going to the young but seemingly much older than his years Danny Alaei. Danny is in his mid-twenties but his demeanor and confidence give the feel of someone much older and more mature. He has the feel of a battle hardened veteran at the tables even at a relatively young age. Alaei was able to sang the $1.4 million top prize after he defeated the other veteran at the final table, Josh Arieh.

Arieh came into the final table as one of the short stacks but a single double up and some impressive play took him from the bottom of the pile to a dominating chip leader. Arieh was all in for and well covered by Scotty Nguyen but the pocket sevens of Arieh held up against the AJ suited for Nguyen to give Josh a double up that started him on a run that left the other players stunned. From as low as 1 million chips Arieh quickly and steadily built a stack of over 10 million and continued to chip up to over 13 million, which he took into heads up play against Alaei.

Danny started heads up play with around 7 million and Arieh had a coinflip for the title when the two were all in with Josh's AK against the pocket queens of Alaei. The pair held and after that the stacks were more balanced and Alaei was able to battle on to the victory, leaving Arieh in the runner up spot but with a still very hefty payout of over $950,000.

The young gun at the table was Faraz Jaka, known as "The-Toilet" online which came from his propensity to play any two suited cards when he first started playing, leading him to make his fair share of flushes. Jaka came in as the chip leader and held steady through much of the final table play but was ultimately eliminated by Alaei in 3rd for $571,374. Back in July Jaka had a runner up finish at the Bellagio Cup World Poker Tour main event for $775,000.

Shawn Buchanan (4th for $333,202), Scotty Nguyen (5th for $249,976) and Steve O'Dwyer(6th for $202,362) rounded out the final table finishes with Joe Cassidy coming up just short of making the TV table with a 7th place finish.

Brunson 10 member Amit "Amak316" Makhija finished in the money with a 26th place finish for $28,569.

The tournament circuit comes to a halt around the holidays but kicks back off in early January. Check back often to see what is going on in the live tournament world and to follow the progress of the Brunson 10.

Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic Day 4

Las Vegas, Nevada - Dec 17th, 2009

The Doyle´s Room family of players was down to only one representative by the time day 4 started at the Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic at the Bellagio. Amit "Amak316" Makhija came into the day 22nd of the remaining 36 players and was able to make his way inside the money but lost a coinflip soon after and was eliminated from the tournament short of a final table appearance.

DoylesRoom.com´s Amit Makhija Aims for WPT Title in Doyle Brunson 5 Diamond World Poker Classic

Las Vegas, Nevada - December 17th, 2009

After strong showings during Day 3, Doyle Brunson and Brunson 10 member Dani Stern bust out of the 5 Diamond World Poker Classic. Amit Makhija heads into Day 4 within reach of final table.

Doyle Brunson has busted out of the tournament named in his honor, but he´ll still be well represented in the WPT Doyle Brunson 5 Diamond World Poker Classic when play resumes today at Noon in Vegas at Bellagio. After a chip count rollercoaster ride that saw Amit Makhija go from 59th place to one of the top spots, the Brunson 10 member heads into Day 4 with enough chips to rally back to the top.

Stated poker legend Doyle Brunson, "All of the members of The Brunson 10 had a good run at Bellagio and I´m proud of every single one of them. Amit´s still in it, he´s on my team of pros for a reason and I really think he´s going to keeping building his chip stack until he´s on top. Just watch."

Amit Makhija will resume play with 423,000 chips. While the Brunson 10 pro was short-stacked during most of the tournament, he rallied late in the day to position himself among the chip leaders. By the end of the day, he had dropped back down to 22nd place.

With the top 27 players finishing in the money, Amit Makhija is still in a position to add to his nearly $2.5 million in lifetime poker winnings. In last year´s WPT Doyle Brunson 5 Diamond World Poker Classic, Makhija earned $21,620 for a 79th place finish.

The Doyle Brunson 5 Diamond World Poker Classic will resume today at Noon at Bellagio in Las Vegas with 36 players remaining. The $15,000+400 buy-in tournament features a $4,761,450 prize pool. The top 27 players will finish in the money.

On Wednesday, February 25th at 9:30 pm ET the excitement kicks off as the star-studded cast takes to the tables and the Celebrity Bounty Tournament begins. For a $27.50 buy-in, players compete in this fast action multi-table Texas Hold'em tournament. One lucky online poker player can win a $25,000 cash prize, simply by knocking out all three key bounties. A handsome $5,000 consolation prize will be awarded if a single player knocks out two key bounties and $500 will be awarded to the player who knocks out any single bounty. First-time players have nothing to lose and everything to gain, as DoylesRoom.com will generously issue a full-refund of their buy-in and fees.

Doyle Brunson Bets Against The Grim Reaper

January 23rd, 2009

Doyle Brunson is one of poker's biggest gamblers making a living off of his well thought out wagers. This time he has outdone himself by literally putting his life on the line and the ball in his court.

This all started when Mack Rawden wrote CinemaBlend's “100 Most Likely People To Die in 2009” and placed Doyle Brunson in 16th place with a 10% chance of kicking the bucket from obesity. If you've seen Doyle recently you would know that he has come quite a long way from his over 300 pound physique. He backs his reasoning for summoning this very peculiar bet in his recent blog.

Doyle has already made a million by losing 100 pounds in one year. Known as the king of poker and prop bets, Doyle has taken on a 10 to 1 wager that he will live to see 2010. Doyle put up $10,000 to Mack Rawden’s $1,000 and both agreed to donate any winnings to the American Cancer Society. One of Doyle's poker friends will hold the bet. The possible list of trustees include; Jack Binion, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Bobby Baldwin, Jennifer Harmon and Mike Sexton. Doyle is currently 75, still betting for a living and now living to win a bet.

Talk about putting your money where your mouth is!
